Looking towards the future, you can see roads teeming with self-driving vehicles. Autonomous cars will change the traffic scenario. Today, traffic results from the independent actions of thousands of people operating their vehicles. If you are in a plane and you take a view of the traffic above any city, you see multitudes of vehicles pursuing their own directions through the maze of roads. Traffic management systems observe, identify and somewhat channel the grand flows. What will happen when these are all self-driving cars?

What is a self-driving car?

An autonomous car is called as driverless car, self-driving car and robotic car. The vehicle can sense its environment and navigate without human interference. There semi-autonomous vehicles that find a space to park themselves; they hit the brakes to avoid fender benders, they stay at the correct lane on the highway, and can be even summoned by their drivers. Since self-driving cars are fully autonomous, they will bring these capabilities to the highest level.

How do driverless cars work?

1. Driverless cars are able to sense their surroundings through high tech computer vision and computer vision and GPS, lidar and radar.

2. Sensory information is processed for the vehicle to navigate proper roadway, avoid any obstacles and also obey road signs.

3. A constantly updated digital map is used by the car according to sensory input. The vehicle is able to respond to changing situations and even cruising through unknown territories never travelled before.

Advantages of driverless cars

If all vehicles are without drivers, bad drivers are not existing lesser mistakes happen on the roads. There would be no drunk and drugged drivers.

Travelers would be able to journey overnight and sleep for the duration.

In urban areas, traffic is easily coordinated preventing occurrence of long tailbacks during busy hours. Commute times are drastically reduced.

·        Uses sensory technology

The environment is perceived better by sensory technology that is superior to the human senses. It sees farther ahead, clear sight even in poor visibility, and detects smaller and more risky obstacles; thus traffic accidents are avoided.

·        Increased speed limits

Increasing speed limits is a reflection of the safer driving, shortening journey times.

·        Safer way to park

No more skills require in parking and maneuvering vehicle. The car could even just drop passengers off and then go and self- park.

·        Boon for PWD, older citizens, young kids and drivers

PWD, seniors and the very young, can now experience the freedom of car travel. No more driver’s license and driving tests as there is no human driver.

·        Reduction in insurance premiums

Autonomous vehicles could bring about a massive reduction in insurance premiums for car owners.

·        More benefits

A long line of benefits from self-driving cars like saving fuel & cutting cost, self-aware lead to reduction of car thief and more comfortable riding experience.

Self-driving vehicles in the future

Without drivers, cars have more space and become mini-leisure rooms. Improve entertainment while riding; such as video screens. No more distracted driver using mobile and other apps.

If technology is evolving, the government must make laws governing self-driving cars. The federal government has not come up with specific laws affecting autonomous cars and left individual states to create their own mandates. The government has to present alternatives for conventional cars and create jobs for former drivers.
